The Ideal Commerce Flow
The smoothest WhatsApp shopping experience follows this path:
Step 1: Customer Browses Catalog The customer opens your catalog from your profile or a link you sent. They scroll through categories, tap items that interest them, and view details.
Step 2: Customer Adds Items to Cart In markets with full cart functionality, customers tap “Add to Cart” for each item they want. The cart icon shows their running total.
Regional Note: The cart feature is not available everywhere. In some markets, WhatsApp has fully integrated shopping carts. In others, customers must tell you what they want via message, and you manually compile the order. Both methods work when executed well.
Step 3: Business Confirms Order Once the customer finishes selecting items, you send a clear order summary:
“Thank you! Here is your order:
2x Leather Wallet (Brown) — $90 1x Canvas Tote (Navy) — $35 Shipping — $5Total: $130Is this correct? Shall I proceed to payment?”
This confirmation prevents errors. It gives the customer a chance to change their mind. It builds trust through transparency.
Step 4: Customer Receives Payment Options
You provide payment methods based on what is available in your market and what your customers prefer.
Option A: In-Chat Payment (where available) In some regions, customers can pay directly within WhatsApp using integrated payment systems. This is the smoothest experience—no leaving the app, no external links, no copying account numbers.
Regional Note: In-chat payment availability depends on local financial infrastructure and regulatory approval. Markets with mature real-time payment systems (like India’s UPI or Brazil’s Pix) often have the most advanced in-chat payment features. Other markets rely on external payment methods. Always check what is currently available in your specific country.
Option B: External Payment Link You send a secure link to a checkout page (Stripe, Square, PayPal, or your website). The customer taps the link, completes payment, and returns to WhatsApp.
Best practices for external links:
-
Use trusted, recognizable payment providers
-
Keep the checkout page simple and mobile-friendly
-
Send the link with clear instructions: “Tap here to pay securely with your card.”
-
Confirm receipt immediately after payment
Option C: Bank Transfer or Mobile Money. You provide account details or mobile money codes. The customer transfers payment and sends confirmation.
Best practices:
-
Provide exact account details with the account name
-
Specify expected confirmation time
-
Ask the customer to send a screenshot of the transfer
-
Confirm receipt promptly to reduce anxiety
Step 5: Payment Confirmation
Immediately upon receiving payment, confirm it in the chat:
“Payment received! Thank you, Sarah. Your order #2847 is confirmed. We are preparing it now and will send tracking details within 24 hours.”
This confirmation:
-
Eliminates customer worry about whether the payment worked
-
Provides an order reference for future questions
-
Sets expectation for next communication
-
Closes the transaction professionally
Step 6: Order Tracking Updates
Keep the customer informed through WhatsApp:
-
“Your order has been packed and is ready for pickup.”
-
“Your order is with the courier. Tracking number: ABC123.”
-
“Your order was delivered today. How did everything look?”
-
“It’s been a week since delivery. Any questions about using your purchase?”
These updates reduce “where is my order” messages. They build trust. They create opportunities for feedback and repeat sales.
