Product Line Expansion
The Value Ladder
Free or Low-Cost Entry
Lead magnets, free tools, low-priced introductory products. These reduce barriers to first engagement and build trust.
Example: A free email course, a $7 template, a basic software plan.
Core Product
Your primary offering that serves most customers. This generates the bulk of revenue and delivers core value.
Example: A $97 online course, a $200 monthly service, a standard software subscription.
Premium Offering
Enhanced version of the core product with additional features, support, or exclusivity. Targets customers who want more and can pay more.
Example: A $497 advanced program, a $500 monthly managed service, a professional software tier.
Enterprise or High-Touch Solution
Customized, intensive solution for customers with complex needs and substantial budgets. Often involves direct service, dedicated support, or bespoke development.
Example: A $5,000 consulting package, a $2,000 monthly retainer, an enterprise software license.
Continuity or Membership
Recurring revenue model that provides ongoing value and community. Creates predictable income and deep customer relationships.
Example: A $49 monthly membership, a $99 quarterly subscription box, an annual software license.
Expansion Strategies
Upselling: Encourage customers to purchase a higher-tier version of what they already use. “Your current plan handles 1,000 contacts. For just $20 more monthly, upgrade to 10,000 contacts.”
Cross-Selling: Offer complementary products to existing customers. “Customers who bought this course also benefited from our templates toolkit.”
Downselling: Offer a lower-priced alternative when customers decline the primary offer. “If the full program is not right for you, our starter guide covers the essentials for $29.”
Bundling: Combine multiple products at a discounted total price. “Purchase the course, templates, and coaching call together and save $100.”
New Market Expansion: Adapt existing products for new customer segments. A course for small business owners might be adapted for corporate training departments.
