Information Gain and E-E-A-T

Search engines, particularly Google, increasingly reward content that provides genuine value beyond what already exists. Two concepts govern this: Information Gain and E-E-A-T.

Information Gain Theory

Information gain refers to the novel value your content adds compared to existing sources. If your article simply repeats what ten other articles already say, it provides zero information gain. Search engines have no reason to rank it.
To create high information gain content:

  1. Go Deeper Do not just list tips. Explain why each tip works, when to use it, and what results to expect. Include original research, data, or case studies.
  2. Add New Perspectives Interview experts with unique viewpoints. Synthesize information from multiple sources into new frameworks. Challenge conventional wisdom with evidence.
  3. Include Original Assets Create tools, templates, calculators, or visualizations that help readers apply what they learn. These assets attract links and shares because they provide practical utility.
  4. Update and Expand Refresh existing content with new information, examples, and insights. An updated guide with 2026 data provides more information gain than a 2022 article on the same topic.

E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness

Google uses E-E-A-T as a quality framework, especially for topics that affect people’s health, finances, safety, or well-being. Even for less sensitive topics, demonstrating E-E-A-T improves your content’s performance.

  • Experience Show that you or your contributors have firsthand experience with the topic. A fitness guide written by someone who actually followed the program carries more weight than generic advice. Include personal stories, original photos, and specific details that only come from doing the work.
  • Expertise Demonstrate deep knowledge. Cite credentials, certifications, or years of practice. Reference research and data. Explain concepts with precision that only comes from mastery.
  • Authoritativeness Build recognition as a go-to source. Earn mentions and links from other respected websites. Speak at industry events. Publish consistently on your topic. Authority grows over time through accumulated recognition.
  • Trustworthiness Be accurate, honest, and transparent. Cite sources. Correct errors promptly. Disclose conflicts of interest. Protect user privacy. Make your contact information accessible. Trust is fragile and essential.
